No Pets Allowed

From School Library Journal No animals are permitted in Percy's apartment building, but he still would like to have a pet. As he wishes for one, he writes a spelling word, "peacock," and suddenly a peacock is standing on his bed. With each new word, a new animal appears. Soon his room is filled with a kangaroo, dinosaur, yak, rhinos, geese, and more. Percy's clever solution to this mess is to write "mouse," which causes the elephant to lead a charge of animals out of the room. The colorful cartoons show a cluttered, toy- and snack-filled room full of caricatured animals. The rhyming text is clever and well paced. It is easy enough for independent readers, but the story would also be a good choice for a read-aloud, allowing young listeners to focus on the mayhem in the illustrations.
